If you would like to waive OSHIP, visit beginning June 2, 2026 and provide information on your personal health insurance. You can expect to receive a response via email confirming if your waiver was accepted or denied. Waiver requests are due no later than Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 5:00pm
Important Waiver Update
Starting July 1, 2026, Oxy will allow students to waive out of OSHIP as long as they can provide evidence of Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC).
- If you are hoping to waive OSHIP with an HMO, EPO, or Medicaid/ Medi-Cal plan, we strongly advise confirming your student will be within your plan’s service area before waiving OSHIP
- For most health plans that only provide Minimum Essential Coverage, the coverage outside your service area is generally limited to true emergency care only
- This means that routine services your child might need—such as annual wellness visits, non-emergency office or specialist visits, non-acute mental health care, lab work/diagnostic testing, physical therapy, and other benefits—are not covered
- While not required, it is strongly recommended that for on-campus study, students have health insurance that covers primary and specialty care services in Los Angeles County
How to Waive Oxy Student Health Insurance
The health insurance waiver is only accessible electronically, and can be found at , starting June 2, 2026.
- Students who wish to waive OSHIP must do so every year; waivers do not automatically carry over year-to-year.
- Waivers only need to be completed once a year unless the student has a change of insurance between semesters. As soon as a student receives new insurance, they must alert Emmons of the change and we can guide them through the waiver process for the new insurance.
- If students do not waive, they will be automatically enrolled in, and charged for, the Oxy Student Health Insurance Plan.
The deadline for applying for a health insurance waiver for the FALL 2026 Semester is Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 5:00pm.
- Waiver requests will not be reviewed after this date and time, and students who fail to opt out by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in OSHIP.
- A charge for OSHIP enrollment for the semester will appear on the student's account if they do not waive.
- Emmons does not have the ability to refund the OSHIP charge for students who do not waive the insurance plan by the deadline.
