Athletics & Wellness

With 20 varsity teams and a host of other activities—from club sports and intramural leagues to wellness and fitness classes—Occidental helps you engage body and mind.

With more than half of our students involved in Occidental College athletics, our commitment to excellence goes beyond the classroom. Whether you’re on the field, in the pool, or at the Occidental College gym, you’ll build the leadership, teamwork, and discipline that will serve you now and in the future.

About a quarter of our students compete in Occidental College sports at the varsity NCAA Division III level and have earned conference championships across multiple sports as well as numerous Academic All-American honors. “All in for Oxy” is more than a slogan—it’s a way of life when you become a Tiger.

Join the Club!

Intramural and club sports are a big part of campus life at Occidental. They’re mostly student-run, offering a fun, competitive way to stay active without the pressure of varsity play. Club teams also give students the chance to step into leadership roles and gain hands-on experience running an organization.

Year-Round Outdoor Living & Recreation

Our Southern California climate allows for outdoor sports and activities all year long. Take a weekend in the Angeles National Forest or along the scenic coastline. Check out a yoga class on campus or in the neighborhood. If bicycling is your thing, stop by our bike share program and cycle through the city or on countless nearby trails.

The Student-Athlete Experience at Oxy

Student-athletes thrive by balancing competitive athletics with a strong academic foundation, developing discipline, leadership, and time management skills along the way. Supportive coaches and a tight-knit community help them grow in every part of campus life.

Anderson Field is the home field for Occidental's baseball team. Located at the Anderson Baseball Field, Spencer Field House features a locker room and coaches’ offices, along with a conference room and athlete lounge.

The home of the Occidental softball program also serves as the site for many recreational teams during the summer and fall.

The Culley Athletic Facility is named in honor of Ben Culley, former dean of students. The varsity weight room, athletic training room and sports medicine office are located in Culley.

The Center features a 25-yard by 34-meter pool with a diving well for swimming, diving, and water polo competition. The all-year outdoor pool provides 15 practice lanes and eight competitive lanes for swimmers; a 34-meter, all-deep-water venue for water polo; and a 13.3 foot-deep diving well with two 1-meter and two 3-meter diving boards for divers. All students have access to the attached recreational pool. Photos and more info

The men's and women's soccer teams compete on the Lower Soccer Field and utilize the Upper Soccer Field as an additional training site. The men's and women's track and field teams' javelin and hammer throws are located here.

Occidental paid tribute to famed professional quarterback and former Occidental Tiger in 2011 by naming the College's first and oldest athletic facility Jack Kemp Stadium. Jack Kemp Stadium includes W.C Patterson Field and Bill Henry Track.

The Center is a 25,000 square-foot facility that includes six courts and stadium seating for 200 on Court 1. View photos

The facility that now hosts men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball is named for Frank "Speedy" Rush, a track star from the class of 1909 who was also a long-time trustee.

Patterson Field serves as the home field for the women's lacrosse program. Both men's and women's soccer teams play a number of games on the 70x110-yard turf during the course of their respective seasons as well.
