Students are responsible for knowing the following:
Health Insurance Requirements:
All enrolled students must have health insurance through an ACA accredited/approved health insurance plan while at Oxy. Students’ health insurance must meet minimum essential coverage (MEC) requirements, however it is strongly recommended that students’ health insurance also cover primary and specialty care services in Los Angeles County.
Students must opt to either:
- Enroll in the Oxy Student Health Insurance Plan (OSHIP), or
- Waive OSHIP and maintain their own health insurance, as long as the coverage meets minimum essential coverage (MEC) requirements.
- While not required, it is strongly recommended that for on-campus study, students have health insurance that covers primary and specialty care services in Los Angeles County.
- Many MEC plans only provide emergency coverage, meaning that routine services a student might need—such as annual wellness visits, non-emergency office or specialist visits, non-acute mental health care, lab work/diagnostic testing, physical therapy, and other benefits—are not covered.
Students without health insurance, and those who do not waive OSHIP by the posted deadline will automatically be enrolled in OSHIP, managed by Aetna Student Health. The deadline for waiving OSHIP for the fall semester is August 20, 2026. Failure to complete the waiver by the deadline will result in the student being enrolled in, and charged for, OSHIP for the fall semester. There is an additional opportunity to waive or opt into OSHIP for the spring semester in the event that there are changes to a student’s insurance coverage. Waivers must be completed at . More information on health insurance requirements can be found on Emmons’ website, and more information on the waiver process can be found on this page.
