Marine Biology

The marine biology concentration at Occidental offers immersive study of ocean ecosystems through hands-on research and fieldwork. Our faculty members specialize in various types of marine biology, from temperate rocky reefs and tropical coastal habitats to the deep-sea.

Earn Your Marine Biology Degree From Oxy

As a biology major with a marine biology concentration at Occidental, you will explore marine life, coastal systems, and conservation science with direct access to the Pacific Ocean. You’ll study ocean ecosystems through one of the nation’s longest-running undergraduate marine science programs, and you’ll build a strong foundation in biology while specializing in marine organisms, ecological processes, and oceanographic systems.

Hands-on research defines the Occidental marine biology undergraduate program. Work with the Vantuna Research Group, conduct fieldwork aboard Oxy’s research vessels, and access a collection of more than 500,000 marine specimens. You might travel to tropical locations to explore coral reefs or venomous snails, or work with precious specimens collected from several miles’ depth along our coast. Students may complete certified research diving coursework and conduct underwater research. Study abroad opportunities in regions such as Australia, New Zealand, and the Galápagos will further expand your global perspective. Graduates are prepared for careers and graduate study in marine science, environmental research, biotechnology, policy, and resource management.

Life beyond land

Study marine organisms from plankton to mammals while examining the physical and biological processes shaping ocean ecosystems. Coursework emphasizes field methods, lab research, and data analysis relevant to coastal and global marine environments.

Spend extensive time at sea aboard research vessels, via the nearby Southern California Marine Institute (of which Occidental is a member institution). You’ll collect data, sample marine life, and participate in long-term coastal monitoring projects. You will also work in the laboratory to uncover the molecular ecology, symbioses, and neurobiology of some of the world's most important and fascinating animals–those that live in the ocean.

Marine Biology students have the opportunity to apply for funded 10-week research positions through the Undergraduate Research Center and present original work at Oxy’s summer research conference.
