The Occidental College Environmental Science program is housed within the biology and geology departments and offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding environmental systems. You’ll study how physical, biological, and human processes interact, drawing from coursework in biology, geology, economics, and related fields. This structure allows you to build a strong scientific foundation while tailoring your studies through either a biology or geology major.
Research and fieldwork are central to the Occidental Environmental Science undergraduate program. Located near the Pacific Ocean, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the Mojave Desert, studying on the Occidental campus offers direct access to diverse ecosystems and geological formations. You’ll conduct hands-on research with faculty mentors, collecting and analyzing your own data rather than relying solely on existing datasets. Graduates pursue careers or graduate study in environmental science, ecology, geology, conservation, policy, and consulting.
