Dr. McCormack uses museum specimens and genomes to study the evolutionary history of birds, focusing especially on how both ancient landscape changes and more recent human-caused environmental changes affect birds’ distributions, appearance, and DNA.

Whitney has experience with genomics and museum collections. She is currently a PhD student in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program at UCLA where she is studying the genetics of color evolution using large-scale biodiversity data. From 2012-2019 she was the head of the Moore Lab DNA program...

Prof. Schulz studies the biology of cone snails, venomous marine gastropods whose peptide neurotoxins are highly selective modulators of ion channels and cell surface receptors.
Prof. Goffredi’s research interests concern beneficial symbiotic partnerships between bacteria and invertebrates.
Trained as an ichthyologist, Prof. Pondella's major research focus is the rocky reefs and kelp beds in the Southern California Bight where he works on a number of programs including marine protected areas, fisheries, artificial reef technology and subtidal restoration.
Prof. Zellmer studies how organisms interact with their environments across natural and human-dominated landscapes, using computational and spatial modeling approaches to address ecological limits and real-world conservation challenges.
Project Proposals
Anyone at Occidental College may propose projects to the Director. The Director will make decisions on priority of projects in consultation with the Steering Committee. In general, projects in the Biology Department or Moore Lab using biodiversity collections will take precedence, followed by other collaborations that explore environmental themes, especially those involving undergraduates in a substantive way. Projects outside the college will be considered as staffing permits.
