Students and faculty expand their role as civically engaged scholars through community-based projects.
The Education in Action (EIA) Program is a cornerstone of community based learning and research (CBL/R) at Oxy. Led by the Center for Community Based Learning (CCBL), the EIA Program supports teams of faculty, students, and community partners in their community based learning and/or research partnerships.
What is the student role in the EIA Program?
Through the EIA program, facilitators expand their role as students, build leadership skills, and further develop their understanding of social justice and responsibility. Students in the EIA Program are referred to as EIA Facilitators. EIA Facilitators are often nominated by a faculty and hired by the CCBL to support CBL/R courses and partnerships. Facilitators and faculty work as collaborative partners to plan and implement CBL classes and CBR projects across a range of academic disciplines.
The role of the EIA Facilitator is complex and demanding. Facilitator responsibilities range depending on the CBL/R project. Past Facilitators have assisted with:
EIA Facilitators are expected to develop reciprocal relationships with faculty, students, community partners, and CCBL staff. Many student facilitators have recognized their own voice and agency within their education while in the EIA program. Students often develop leadership and professional skills that influence and contribute to their work after college.
