Lily Shababi is a musicologist and musician based in Los Angeles, CA.
Her dissertation, Resistance through Software: The Emergence of Hyperpop as a Queer and Trans Electronic Music Subculture, 2014–2024, examines how queer and trans musicians use music software to blur traditional gender-voice significations and to transgress music production’s exclusionary history. Through interviews, participant observation, and close analysis of sound synthesis processes, she demonstrates how technology can be harnessed as a tool for transgressive experiences of gender and selfhood. She has presented her work at the American Musicological Society, the Society for Ethnomusicology, and the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society, where she received the Ingolf Dahl Award in May 2023. Lily is also a performer and composer of experimental electroacoustic music
