Politics

At Occidental College, studying politics means asking tough questions about power, justice, and change. In the Occidental College Politics program, you’ll learn how people govern themselves, build communities, and influence systems, right in one of the most diverse cities in the world.

Earn Your Politics Degree From Oxy

As a politics major at Occidental College, you’ll explore how governments function, how laws are made, and how individuals and social movements shape policy. You’ll study democracy, rights, and political identity while learning to analyze, write, and communicate with clarity and purpose.

The Occidental politics undergraduate program combines academic rigor with hands-on experience. Understanding power, policy, and participation

The Politics Department at Occidental College helps you examine how people organize, govern, and advocate for change. Study comparative and American politics, international relations, law, and political theory while developing analytical, research, and communication skills that prepare you for any field.

Politics majors at Oxy College combine classroom learning with real-world engagement. You can work with faculty on original research or gain hands-on experience through programs such as Campaign Semester, where you’ll spend a term working full-time on a political campaign while earning course credit. The department also supports student internships and research through awards like the Anderson, Reath, McKelvey, and Caldwell fellowships and awards. Our one-of-a-kind Lawyering for Social Justice Program gives you hands-on experience in public-interest law, affording new insights into the legal system and a head start on law school.

Politics connects naturally with economics, Urban and Environmental Policy, Diplomacy and World Affairs, sociology, and history. Pairing your politics major with another program helps you explore public service, sustainability, or international issues from new perspectives.

One of the reasons I chose Oxy was because of the small class sizes and the opportunity to form meaningful relationships with faculty. [My professors] have all been superb teachers and mentors who are completely invested in the success of their students.
