Earn Your Education Minor at Occidental

The Occidental education undergraduate program is designed for students who want to understand education as a social, political, and community-based practice. You’ll study how schooling shapes opportunity and inequality while exploring pedagogy, education policy, and reform in urban contexts. While Oxy does not offer teacher certification, the program prepares you to be an effective educator in the broadest sense.

Coursework is paired with hands-on experience through community-based learning in Los Angeles. You’ll work with public schools and local organizations in Northeast LA, Pasadena, and Glendale, applying theory to real educational challenges. Graduates of the Occidental College Education Department pursue careers in teaching, school leadership, nonprofit advocacy, policy, and graduate study in education and related fields.

Understanding Education in Context

You’ll examine schooling through sociocultural, political, and community-based lenses. Coursework emphasizes equity, urban education, and advocacy while building strong analytical and communication skills you can apply across careers.

Study how schools operate within broader social and neighborhood contexts. You’ll analyze pedagogy, conflict, and policy with a focus on urban schooling and educational equity.

Apply what you learn through field-based research projects and other community experiences. You’ll partner with schools and organizations across Los Angeles to understand education reform, activism, and improvement in practice.

The education minor pairs well with other areas of study, such as Media Arts and Culture, psychology, sociology, politics, Urban and Environmental Policy, Black Studies, American Studies, and math and the sciences. Combining programs helps you approach education from multiple perspectives.
